The Carnation Revolution took place in 1974, during the Cold War. The Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) made efforts to have impact on Portuguese politics.

In the 1960s, the FRG supported the war effort of the Salazar's regime. The Germans provided resources for the Portuguese in the colonial wars in Africa. In the early 1970s, the SPD, already in the power, established dialogue with the Portuguese non-communist opposition leaders. The Portuguese Socialist Party was founded by Mario Soares in the FRG in 1973, under the influence of the SPD.

When the Carnation Revolution took place, the GDR government hoped to have a country in the communist bloc in Western Europe. In the early days after the April 25th, the communists had a big influence in Alentejo and they tried to promote a land reform. The GDR government assisted these efforts through the provision of agriculture machines.
