The spiral is the most boring of the four.  My prediction is that the top left design wins the first vote and then the Kiwis keep the current flag in the second.

It looks like the flag of an obscure Japanese prefecture. Which I guess would automatically make it better than most national flags, if also sillier.

Yeah, I thought the Japanese/oriental touch would appeal to Madeleine, which is why I was curious.

If it were centered on the field I'd actually like it a lot. Something about the combination of the mon-like design and the positioning partway towards the hoist just irks me.

This flag has won the referendum to become the challenger to the current flag:

In addition to the others, it also beat another candidate flag that had been added as an option:

Extremely close in the end, but Option E is so, so much nicer looking. But the worst flags still lost, so it's alright.

That's so tacky. The design is way too busy.

I like it even better than the existing flag -but what do the Kiwis themselves think, I wonder?

Not really.  It has only two design elements, the silver fern and the existing New Zealand vexillological Southern Cross.  Granted those elements are a little busy, but not too busy and certainly no worse than the current flag with the UK flag and the Southern Cross.

They're not balanced well.

I'd keep the stars all white tbh. Ditch the RWB colour scheme.

Looking forward to the existing flag being retained. I'm not even a monarchist.

I prefer this to the "challenger":

Although this didn't make the final cut.

I'm worried about the possibility that NZ's voting public ruin this opportunity to remove colonial sympolism and adopt a real flag. Australia allowed themselves to be hoodwinked by the "muh veterans" argument and they remain a nation without a real non-colonial national flag. New Zealand's flag is the same as it stands now, I know the new design has it's flaws, but the old colonial flag is a meaningless relic from a bygone era that is difficult to differentiate from it's neighbor.
