Report.

Grassley (R)- 51%
Vilsack (D)- 42%

Grassley's approval is 57/29, which makes him one of the most popular Senators. Vilsack's favorables are good, though, 46/36.

Will he even run again? Isn't he basically a fossil by now?

This could change, but considering how Vilsack is probably the strongest Dem in Iowa - and I doubt he'll run, Grassley is looking pretty good.

Was this poll really necessary?

It was just an additional question for the 2014 poll.

I realize it's early (and that Vilsack is likely the strongest candidate the Democrats could put forward), but am I the only one who was underwhelmed by this margin?

He will be 83 by the time of the 2016 election. But he seems like wants to run for another term for whatever reason.

He says he doesn't want Iowa to have two freshmen/unexperienced senators. I personally believe that he'll retire if Ernst wins this year but run again if Braley wins.

I disagree. Regardless of who wins this year, I think he'll run in 2016.

Damn, looks like the dumb people of Iowa will be keeping this right-winger around for another six years.

Dems need to learn from the GOP's tactics in 2014 and apply them to 2016. They took formerly popular statewide officials, nuked them to oblivion in Koch-funded ads, and now they're toxic. Grassley should be one of the targets of this, rather than just assuming "high approval, meh, we give up" like we did with Collins this year.

Once you start to get too old, the voters get pissed at you. Your stock drops. Look at Roberts, Lugar, Cochran etc

Had nobody stood against Lugar in the Primary he'd still be a Senator.

That's true, but I also don't think that necessarily applies in the case of Grassley. Roberts and Lugar both had residency issues, and all three (to an extent) were seen as too comfortable in their position. On the other hand, Grassley is incredibly active. Every year, he visits every single county in Iowa. Unlike the other three, he's remained engaged with his constituents.

And yes, Lugar would have easily won the General Election.

No. He's running again to protect his seat in a map that will be a GOP nightmare
