1) How would he do in the Republican primaries? Would it be a Gore-like triumph? A tough fight, but he eventually wins? Or would he actually lose the primary?

2) If he did manage to win the primary, how badly would he get crushed in the GE?

My answers:

1) I think it would be an extremely tough fight against McCain. Probably a few people who ran in the real world wouldn't have run against Cheney. However, despite the fact that the Bush administration was toxic among the broader electorate, it was still seen fairly positively by the Republican base. Because of this, Cheney manages to scrape out a hard fought victory against "RINO McCain".

2) If Obama still won the nomination, there was simply a floor that Cheney wouldn't fall below due to Obama's skin color. So probably something like this:

Obama - 420
Cheney - 118

However, if Hillary or Edwards (minus Rielle Hunter) would the nomination, it could've been close to a 50 state sweep:

White Dem - 503
Cheney - 35

One of my favorite pieces of presidential trivia is the fact that the 2008 Presidential Election is the only one since 1952 in which neither the incumbent President nor the incumbent Vice President is a candidate.

1956 -- President Eisenhower
1960 -- Vice President Nixon
1964 -- President Johnson
1968 -- Vice President Humphrey
1972 -- President Nixon
1976 -- President Ford
1980 -- President Carter
1984 -- President Reagan
1988 -- Vice President Bush
1992 -- President Bush
1996 -- President Clinton
2000 -- Vice President Gore
2004 -- President Bush
2012 -- President Obama
