After solid Republican rule from 1969-1989, the parties split up in a huge realigning election. The candidates are:

Businessman Hiram Ross Perot (Reform-TX)/Economist Pat Choate (Reform-IL): Centrist, realist; economically center to center-left, socially center-right to right-wing

Gov. Howard Dean (Progressive-VT)/Sen. Eugene McCarthy (Progressive-MN): Left-libertarianism, dove; economically center to center-left, socially left-wing

Sen. Jack Carter (People's-GA)/Gov. Jay Rockefeller (People's-WV): Populism, hawk; economically left-wing, socially right-wing

Fmr. Rep. Barry Goldwater, Jr. (Liberty-AK)/Gov. Jerry Brown (Liberty-CA): Realist libertarianism, dove; economically center to center-right, socially left-wing
