the website of the ministry of the interior is quite useful... (direct link to their presidential election 2016 center)

if hofer isn't ahead by more than 2 points on sunday, monday is going to be the big day.

Some positives for Hofer might be that the biggest declines in postal votes is Vienna, and Carinthia is down the least.

Maybe, but I wouldn't read too much into these numbers.

See delusional Hillary supporters and their early vote fantasies ...

Oh, certainly early voting misreadings are quite common by everybody, but I would think anything indicating less electoral activity coming out of Vienna would most likely be good news for Hofer.

Anyone else planning my strategy for following the returns? I'm just going to be on the official results page and constantly refreshing. I don't want to see any exit polls, which just take the drama away.  Also going with the assumption that Hofer needs a margin of somewhere over 200k votes on Sunday to make up for Vdb  expected win with the postal ballots.

Actually more like a 180k vote lead for Hofer tomorrow and he should be President.

VdB is unlikely to net more than 170k votes on Monday with the postal vote count.

Weather update for tomorrow:

Clear sky almost everywhere, many parts are even cloudless.

Very cold though, with -5°C (20°F) in the morning to about +8°C (46°F) in the afternoon. Colder in the Vienna area at around zero degrees (32°F). Many areas could also have nasty fog until the afternoon.

Nigel Farage today said that "he'd bet all his money on a Hofer-win tomorrow".

And that Hofer will initiate an Auxit referendum if elected (apparently Farage doesn't know that the President cannot initiate referendums, only the government parties can).

his quotes make the FPÖ quite nervous since hofer spent the campaign rejecting such allegations......party  operative and "brain" of the party herbert kickl criticized farage as clueless about FPÖ positioning and goals.

How quickly does Austria count its votes?

Polls close at 5pm (11am NY time), with a first projection a few minutes after that (based on about 40% of precincts already counted).

All election day votes should be counted within 2-3 hours (but vote counting today will be very careful and along the Constitutional Court ruling. This election will be the cleanest ever).

Postal votes will be counted tomorrow, starting at 9am and last the whole day (they will also be counted very carefully this time).

don't think the postal votes are going to be more pro-hofer.

but....maybe a bunch of postal voters is less inclined to vote this time....if upper austria and vienna holds for VdB he is going to be fine.

Vienna is ultra-solid safe hold for VdB. Upper Austria is notable as it is a swing state.

Observations:

Because the weather is amazing today, people are pouring outdoors. I walked past my polling station at around 11am to get a morning newspaper and it was packed with people and a steady stream in and out (I already voted by postal ballot, so I didn't go inside).

The good weather might actually prevent a much lower turnout than in May. I predicted only 65% turnout, but instead it seems it might hit 70% based on what I saw so far.

I assume voting ends 6PM Vienna time and that is when we should expect exit polls?

5pm.

A first projection will be out 10-15 minutes later this time because the Court ruling blocked any results from being delivered to "exit pollsters" before 5pm. And they need about 10 minutes to create a good projection.

What a contrast of closing times between Austria of 5PM and Italy of 11PM

More turnout rumours:

* strong turnout in Vienna (higher than in the May runoff)

* roughly the same turnout in Carinthia
