I'm guessing this harms Gillespie the most as he only succeeds in a room full of insiders.

Cuccinelli was never going to run anyway.

I'm guessing this harms Gillespie the most as he only succeeds in a room full of insiders.

Virginia state conventions aren't rooms full of insiders so much as they are rooms full of nutjobs. This harms Stewart the most, and probably helps Gillespie, since he's the only gubernatorial candidate who's run a statewide campaign in the past and has the best name recognition.

Considering that Cuccinelli ran a terrible campaign and still just barely lost (and we're going to be well into the Clinton Presidency by the time this is held), I'd have to say Gillespie will be mildly favored over Northam as well.

Will be interesting to see who Republicans nominate for the special Senate election in 2017 as well -- definitely hoping for Comstock.

to be fair to Cooch's surprisingly close loss, he was running against Terry McCAuliffe, whose favorable ratings at the time were almost as bad.

Sure, but McAuliffe ran a pretty good campaign.

The parallels between that race and our ongoing presidential election (much as I hate to draw the comparison between Cuccinelli, an honorable man I've always liked, and Donald Trump) are actually pretty eerie, imo.

This will benefit Gillespie for sure. I don't think Stewart would be able to defeat him in a primary. I still doubt he'll defeat Northam, especially since Northam could very well be an incumbent by election day which could give him an even greater advantage.

Where are you getting an impression that Clinton wants McAuliffe in her cabinet?

If only this was the case in 2013. Bill Bolling would be governor right now as we speak.

Bolling must be super disappointed.

Not sure if this will actually change the 2017 race, but if it stays that way for future elections it'll definitely benefit the VAGOP.
