History pointed to 2016 being the year the Republican were to get back in control of the White House, despite what Trump had going against him in the campaign, and still won. Using that, what future election years look favorable to Democrats and Republicans?

History means nothing. Every presidential election is unique...trends are coincidental.

The fundamentals are more reliable guides of presidential campaigns than the news cycle and polls. Look at the incumbent President's approval rating, state of the economy, state of foreign policy etc, not the polls after Trump's latest gaffe, that will give you the best indication of who will win.
