You mean to say Republicans are uniting around the party's nominee?

Well, I'd heard a theory during the primaries that once Romney cinched the nomination, the Keystone Phils and jmfcsts would stay home, Republican turnout would be very low, and Obama would win in a landslide. It seems this is not shaping up to be true (though the early campaign doesn't matter much).

McCain thrashed Obama in the early months but when Obama got going there was no contest.

Not really; McCain's best times were late July/August/early September; early on Obama was the one doing fairly well, before stumbling and then recovering.
