CNN has just projected that Republican Joseph Cao will beat Democrat William Jefferson (the guy who was facing 16 charges relating to bribery).

Jefferson was expected to be able to be Cao even though he had been indicted, so this is really a surprise for me (and I've been following this election for a poli-sci class.

Blacks must've stayed home in droves... I'm just totally shellshocked that a 2/3rds black district elected an Asian man over Jefferson, as corrupt as he was. This is probably the most shocking result I've seen since NH primary...

Quite possible that the liberals voted for the Republican over him considering what he did to Carter last time.  Lots of potential explanations - this is one to look at the precincts for.

Well, that type of result says it isn't super black, but wow.

I'm a liberal who voted for Cao today.  I look forward to two years of tireless representation from him before we boot him for a (less corrupt) Democrat.  Hopefully state representative Cedric Richmond.

Maybe the brain-dead primary voters of LA-2 will wise up. Epic fail for New Orleans Democrats.

Oddly enough, Jefferson Parish was where Bill Jefferson won big in 2006, while in New Orleans, he only won by 2%. And in this election, New Orleans is still close, but he lost Jefferson big time.

Well congratulations Cao, you've arranged yourself a nice, high-paying lobbyist job starting in 2011.

Black liberal vs. "anything-else" R is the answer there.

The precincts just posted are Central District (Lafayette Square/Sugar Bowl/Convention Center) and part of the Garden District, respectively

Actually the "liberal" blacks were probably the ones voting for Carter as precinct results show Carter got close to 100% of whites but Jefferson got probably around 75% of blacks. These results show that Cao got more of the white vote than Jefferson did of the black vote, Jefferson is doing worse among whites than Obama did in rural Mississippi.

Also the blacks clearly stayed home. See for example Ward 12 Precinct 19 which voted unanimously for Obama with 119 votes. Jefferson got 31 votes to Cao's 4.

I guess this means there is hope for our political system after all. I hope this provides a warning to the Don Youngs, John Murtha's and Paul kanjorski's of the world.
