C'mon! Let's get to election night! What's Gokdwater done on foreign policy so far? And how close is the USSR to collapsing?

He's met with Gorbachev and they USSR could collapse anytime soon.

After meeting with Gorbachev (the past few years) and trying to take down the USSR.  It finally falls on November 7th (the day before the Election).  Good news for the Goldwater camp.  He plans to help a new democratic government in the Soviet Union.

Privately Goldwater says "Thank goodness."  Election results soon.

101st Congress:
House: 253 Republicans, 182 Democrats
Senate: 57 Republicans, 43 Democrats

Speaker of the House: Robert Michel
House Majority Leader: Dick Cheney
House Minority Leader: Tom Foley

Senate Majority Leader: Bob Dole
Senate Minority Leader: Ted Kennedy

Kennedy was elected to the Senate in Massachusetts in his old seat with 70% of the vote.

President Goldwater will have an increased Republican Congress to work with.

On January 3rd, 1989 the 101st Congress is sworn in.  Speaker Michel states "In this Congress we will have alot more Republican votes.  We plan to make this a more productive Congress compared to the previous one."  Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole states "This year we can plan to bring forward some of the failed legislation from last time with a probability of better success."

On January 20th, 1989 President Goldwater's reinaugurated for a 2nd term.  "Today Americans we're better than we have been in years.  The economy's on the right course and the Soviet Union is finally gone.  During the next few years we will defend our freedoms.  We don't always need government assistance.  People can fend for themselves.  Thank you and God Bless America."

There's talk of Congress trying to repeal the 22nd Amendment.  We will see what happens with that.

Wouldn't Dick Cheney be in the leadership as he was Minority Whip in 1989 til he left a few months later to become SecDef. Good work, glad for a second Gokdwater term. Was hoping Weicker might take SD or something but oh well. Let's see what the next 4 years have in store!

Also, while your 1896 tl continue? I was hoping to see the 3rd term of Colin Powell & onward.

On February 20th after meetings between House leaders the House votes 300-135 to repeal the 22nd Amendment.  By the end of the month the Senate votes 74-26.  Therefore it is sent to the states for ratification.  President Goldwater feels that this amendment will be repealed in the next year or so.

On March 20, 1989 Congressman Newt Gingrich becomes House Majority Whip.  Speaker Michel says "I feel that Congressman Gingrich will do well as House Majority Whip.  He stands up for alot of conservative values."

Just 4 days later the Exxon Valdez spills in Alaska.  There's over 200,000 barrels of oil that spilled. President Goldwater is in a "pickle" here.  He wants to appease the conservative base but he feels that if he doesn't do anything that could cost him support over the next few years.  (Especially if the Amendment passes giving President's the option to run as many times as they want.)  He schedules a TV appearance to address the nation about the spill in a week.  Senate Minority Leader Ted Kennedy says "I have a feeling that this President won't do anything for this.  He will stand up for the oil companies."

Who is Pressler?  And did Goldwater's age have any affect on the race?  Did Lieberman win?  Please don't take this as trolling, I'm just generally interested in this TL.

Larry Pressler was a Senator from South Dakota.  Lieberman won his election.  His was the only seat that was a Democratic gain.  Other Democrats lost including Frank Lautenberg and Bob Kerrey.

President Goldwater decides to meet with the EPA, Speaker of the House Robert Michel, House Majority Leader Newt Gingrich, House Minority Leader Tom Foley, Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole and Senate Minority Leader Ted Kennedy.  They discuss ways to stop another oil disaster.

After the meeting President Goldwater states "We're in the process of a compromise on the Exxon Valdez disaster.  I still think we should be able to drill as much as possible though."  Senate Leaders Bob Dole and Ted Kennedy said "The first meeting went well and we're on a way to a compromise."

The EPA leaders state "We feel that President Goldwater is somewhat hesitant to do anything major for the environment however we feel somewhat alright with the meeting today."

President Goldwater states there will be an agreement: you can still drill in most places but you have to check the area to see if it will be safe in case of a disaster before drilling. You also, if you decide to drill, have someone check on the wells frequently.  Goldwater feels that he got a majority of what he wanted in the bill.  Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Ted Kennedy states "This was the best we could do at this point.  I thought it could've been better but it's better than totally pandering to the oil companies."

The Environmental And Oil Compromise Act of 1989 passes the House 250-185.  It passes the Senate 64-36.  President Goldwater signs it into law on April 10, 1989.

On January 29, 1990 the 22nd Amendment is repealed, as 38 states ratify it by that date, and therefore President Goldwater is free to run for a third term in 1992 if he wishes to.

President Goldwater hopes that Republicans can win more seats in November, however, as of right now it looks like they could lose the House.  We will see what happens, though.

I agree, but why did they repeal the 22nd amendment?  I mean, I'm no fan of restricting our elections with term limits, but is there some sort of crisis that would warrant it?

Well President Goldwater really wanted to be able to run for a third term if he could and was healthy enough.  I can get rid of that part if you want.

No it's great, I just thought that maybe some crisis would help him force it through, kinda like FDR with his own "draft" in 1940.  Magnificent TL.
