I once read an alternate history short story in which Bobby spotted Sirhan before he got the shot off and wasn't hit as a result. From there, it got strange. RFK went heavy on a law and order platform focussed on the fact that the poor are the ones that suffer most from it. He got LBJ upset at him, and made it clear that if he didn't tone it down, he'd have a tough time at the convention with challenged delegates and the like. Bobby decided to then think outside the box and offered the GOP a Kennedy-Nixon ticket. Thanks to RFK's dramatic dodging of assassination, the numbers indicated that even if RFK had to run as an independent, the best Nixon could hope to do would be come in second in a three-way race, Nixon accepted. Humphrey was now the leading Democratic nominee, but it was also obvious he would get creamed, so they decided to fight one Kennedy with another by nominating Teddy. The election of course had massive turnout, but the Kennedy-Nixon ticket won it in a squeaker. At a family gathering that December, the brothers decided to ditch the Secret Service and take a quick road trip together while they still could. On January 20, Nixon was sworn in as President, since Bobby had drowned when Teddy drove off a bridge at Chappaquiddick.
