I actually think Begich pulls this out. Alaska loves its incumbents and his ground game in the bush is unprecedented.

Ted Stevens and Primary Murkowskis say hi

Alaska seems to love their incumbents in general elections. Both Democratic US Senators from Alaska ended up losing because of a primary. What was odd about Mike Gravel's primary of Ernest Gruening, is that the guy who would publish the Pentagon papers in the official Senate record primaried one of only 2 Senators (and the only Democrat) to vote against the Vietnam war.
