A new parliament will be elected in Liechtenstein this Sunday.

The 2 main parties are

* Fatherland Union (Vaterländische Union, VU)
* Progressive Citizens Party (Fortschrittliche Bürgerpartei in Liechtenstein, FBP)

Both of them are conservative, even though the VU is the more liberal one.

In this election there will be 2 other parties:

* The Free List (Freie Liste, FL) - Social Democratic/Green
* The Independents (Die Unabhängigen, DU)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liechtenstein_parliamentary_election,_2013

Usually, in the past 75 years, the VU and FBP have always formed a Grand Conservative Coalition, with the exception of 1997-2005, in which they governed alone.

The results in 2009:

47.6% - 95.219 votes - VU
43.5% - 86.951 votes - FBP
  8.9% - 17.835 votes - FL

Eligible voters: 18.493
Total turnout: 15.650 (by absentee/postal ballot: 80.4%)
Turnout in %: 84.6

http://www.landtagswahlen.li/resultate.aspx?eeid=7&ukid=14

Voting will be open on Sunday for 1.5 hours from 10:30 am to 12:00

Considering that more than 80% vote absentee, this makes sense.

Did anyone else's school elections have parties? Because mine did, even though there was basically no difference whatsoever amongst them. I get the impression the elections here are the same way. The parties aren't based off any type of ideology or issues.

There are two constituencies, with voters in one having 15 votes for 15 seats, and the other with 10 and 10.

What of Luxembourg and Austria?

Austria is a republic, not a direct successor to the HRE. Luxembourg was part of France or the Netherlands, no?

EDIT: It was part of the HRE too. That makes two.

Luxembourg was also a member of the successive German Confederation, while ruled in personal union by the the Netherlands monarchs.

The polls have closed and the ballots are counted:

http://www.landtagswahlen.li/resultate.aspx?eeid=8&ukid=14

Turnout based on the absentee ballots returned until Friday was 76.2%, so alltogether turnout will be around 80-85%.

The first results (from Planken) indicate massive losses for the governing VU, less massive but still substantial losses for the FBP, moderate gains for the FL and a great result for the independents.

In Schellenberg, the second electoral district which has released its final numbers, the FBP actually loses more than the VU. The trends for the FL and the independents remain the same, though.

So the FBP is the strongest party again with 40% of the vote. The VU lost 14% and is at 33.5% now. The FL gained 2.2% and is at 11.1%, while the newly formed party "The Independents" received 15.3% of the vote.

The composition of the parliament is as follows:

FBP 10 seats (-1)
VU 8 seats (-5)
FL 3 seats (+2)
DU 4 seats (+4)

http://www.landtagswahlen.li/resultate.aspx?eeid=8

The FBP is probably going to try to form a coalition with the VU. According to wikipedia, the FBP is more loyal to the prince and oriented towards Austria while the VU tends to be the more democracy-friendly party with closer ties to Switzerland. I have no clue to what extent this is accurate and if this has an actual impact on the way the country will be governed in the next four years, though.

What is the platform of The Independents, if any?

"Banker and previous VU parliamentarian Harry Quaderer heads the Independents, whose website claims they are not a party.

Their platform covers a broad range of sometimes seemingly conflicting issues, including providing affordable housing, not raising taxes and balancing the state budget.

The four independents who won seats in Sunday's election include a patent attorney and a communications executive as well as the cross-dressing mechanic, who is 60."

Also, I was under the impression that the VU was free market liberal while the FBP were conservative traditionalists, kinda putting the VU to the right of the FBP.

Strongly ? No. 48% voted in favor of abortion in 2011, with 52% opposed. And that was because the Prince threatened his veto. We don't know how many would have voted for abortion if the election would have been fair. But 52% is not strong.

Oh, I was having the result of another referendum on that question, I think. They tend to hold them pretty frequently.
