Yes, I think the "incumbency effect" is horrendously overrated by the media. Perhaps it's because for quite some time in the nineties and noughties the federal government and most states were led by very talented politicians who could successfully bamboozle the their opponents. Abbott quite frankly is no Howard, bless.
