Statistically, the correct answer is Detroit. But Florida's larger cities aren't exactly safe - especially Miami and Orlando. Where I live in Florida has a relatively high crime rate, but it's not too dangerous. In most places you'd feel safe leaving your door unlocked at night. Although in Jacksonville, just a few miles away, I certainly wouldn't advise that.

b.a balanced meal should be provided, for a minimal fee or free to poor people at every public school.

When did free (or even full price) lunches in schools become a thing in America? My schools' facilities never extended beyond vending machines, so this is all a bit strange to me.

Cafeterias aren't a thing in your area?   Were students just expected to bring their own lunch?

I don't mean to single out this post, but I think this is a good example of the close-minded thinking by both the left and right. One can believe that feeding poor children is important, but disagree with dumping that problem into the school system. I talked about this before - we dump all of our social problems into the school system in America as if putting everything in one place and then throwing money at it will solve the problem. Schools are a convenient black box where we can throw our problems and feel good about not having to look at them. No wonder schools are failing.

Take it from this once-and-future substitute teacher; hungry kids do not learn well. They also get unruly and surly. Unlike some other problems (for example: teachers are not trained to be social workers even if they can be eyes and ears), food service at the schools is a reasonable thing to provide. Hungry kids are not good learners.

No child deserves to be shamed for poverty or for having neglectful/abusive/improvident parents.... let alone customers of "Walter White" (lest you have already forgotten Breaking Bad and its connection to New Mexico).

I think he'll win the primary but I hope he loses, for things like f**king over his constituents by being one of four Dems to vote for the Stream Protection Rule repeal, approving idiots like Carson and Perry to Trump's cabinet, and voting in favor of JEFF SESSIONS. Yeah, if I had my way, he should resign.

This is what I don't get - you hope he loses, but you understand who will very likely take his place in the Senate then, right? A Republican who would do all those things you just listed and far more.

The JD candidate is definitely someone I'd like in Manchin's seat (as far as I can tell), but she doesn't seem like a realistic winner in WV at all. Is an anti-coal crusader the best option there? Why can't they run candidates for other lower offices in WV first to see if that kind of candidate can actually win? As much as Manchin may piss liberals off, he still votes with Democrats much more than any Republican would.

If groups like JD start torpedoing Democratic Senate seats in conservative-leaning states in 2018, Democrats are going to be in the Senate minority for many years. The current path back to power in that chamber already requires a multi-cycle effort, and has little room for error.

Wine, like most things, is an acquired taste and super good once you're used to it.  It's actually pretty entertaining for a weekend activity to get into the different types of (red) wine.  I think white wine is gross, though.

You know, I'm an idiot. Like, I don't know much about most things. But I know just a LITTLE about wine, okay? And a blanket statement like "white wine is too sweet" is ridiculous. There are many, many varieties of white wine. Within those varieties, some producers add more or less sugar. I have had some sickly sweet chardonnays in my day, and some delicious dry ones as well. If you want to say something like "Moscato in general is too sweet for me" I will shake your hand and offer to finish your glass for you. But if you say "all white wine is too sweet" I will smack you square in the tit. I won't want to - but I will. Because that is dumb.

It's not especially fair to compare someone who was an academic historian, albeit one whose personal project was oriented around retelling American history as a morality tale, to an un-credentialed editorialist who has written a couple of potboilers posing as political non-fiction to get in on the vast right-wing publishing grift. (Can you imagine anyone like Eric Foner writing an admiring obituary for Jonah Goldberg?)

Zinn's work is also impossible to separate from how history is taught in the United States and I don't think you can read it without thinking of it as a response to the parade of decontextualized facts, great men, and unerring optimism and progress to which students in most primary and secondary school classrooms are subject.

Of course it's a response to something.  That doesn't make it good history. Note I didn't say anything about Jonah Goldberg's credentials or whether historians with leftist sympathies have nice things to say about him.

I think that you would be hard pressed to find any historian who believes that Jonah Goldberg's is making a positive contribution - or even an honest attempt at one - to the public's understanding of history or politics.

I believe those historians who have some nice things to say about Zinn's work generally do so because of it's promoting among the public the interest of certain kinds of history, not the understanding of that history.   I find it much more difficult myself to be so sanguine about the distortions promoted by this work in its influence on the public understanding of history.  The fact that he was an academic historian only makes these distortions the more jarring.

My question is this:  Why is this nut case getting so much attention?  Why is his speaking on campus a national news story?  Angela Davis spoke at my campus in 1975; why wasn't that news? 

The reason was because of the "counter-demonstrators".  They're the ones that make violence possible.  They're there to provoke Spencer and his crowd to violence.  Which is what Spencer wants, as to the more hairy followers of Spencer. 

"Counter-demonstrators" are what keep these alt-right lunatics "relevant".  They, and the media that can't wait to cover the speeches of folks like Spencer, in the hope that violence will break out and some "journalist" will get a leg up toward his next Pulitzer Prize or book contract.  If a tree fell in forest and nobody heard it fall, did it make a noise?  If Richard Spencer spoke on whatever he speaks about and no media showed up, was it an event?

Here's the key to drying up the alt-right:  STOP GIVING THEM ATTENTION!
