I don't believe South Africa has EVER had a direct presdiential election. Until the 60s there wasn't even a presdient: a governor general represented the King/Queen. It only became an executive post in the 80s, but wasn't directly elected then either (nor is it now).

If you mean, how would one vote in a general election, I think that's pretty easy.

Unionist till 1920
South African 1920 - 1933
United 1938-1958
Progressive 1961-1974
Progressive Federal 1977-1987
Democrat 1989-1998
DA 2004 -

No, South Africa never had direct presidential elections and the President has only been the real baas since 1983.

Anyhow, the pre-94 stuff (if you're white) depends a lot if you're doing it with hindsight or not, because nobody these days except a few racist buffoons will admit to liking apartheid but in a white South African context in 1948 and on, a lot would probably approve of it. I'd like to think that if I lived in South Africa from 1910 onward I would like John X. Merriman, but...

1910: racist c**nts, all
