America is becoming a plutocratic oligarchy; the plutocrats don't give a d@mn about same-sex marriage. But destroying labor unions, gutting the welfare system, shifting taxes from the rich to the non-rich, privatizing anything in sight if such can turn a profit at the expense of social equity, full-bore monopolization...
The best description of the ethos behind contemporary American politics is "He who owns the gold makes the rules." Such is a very illiberal, reactionary basis of politics.
