Well that's common sense, when the sperm meets the egg that is the very beginning of human life. It's pure science.

Human conception has occurred in a petri dish.

Oh, you mean the individual soul/consciousness/whatev'? No, after. Before birth, though. Exact date is undefinable as it's a gradual process.

Attachment to the uterine wall is a much more sensible condition, unless fertility clinics are mass murderers...
I have always considered fertility treatment to be much less defensible morally than an early-term abortion.

This question is misleading. Does life begin? Obviously, what else do you call cells multiplying and all that? Is it intelligent or conscious life is the real question. And the obvious answer to that is no, at least so far as science is concerned. If you pro-lifers genuinely believe that the soul is present at that point I'm not going to waste time arguing with you. But that's a religion belief and shouldn't have any bearing on this debate IMO.
