Hopefully this will be a wake-up call to complacent Democrats.

That's the one silver-lining. Maybe now they'll stop dicking around and start passing legislation. I'm not holding my breath though.

The Dems arrogance backfired this time.

They brought this on themselves by their atrocious behavior in changing the laws and the rules to suit their own purposes.

This is a glorious day for Massachusetts.

This is a glorious day for the United States of America.

This is a glorious day for democracy.

We are witnessing history.

We are witnessing the end of Kennedy  dominance in Massachusetts politics.

Scott Brown will serve his state and the nation well.

Praise Jesus!

Democrats haven't changed any rules... they've been strictly following the 60 vote super-majority rule in the Senate even though Republicans have been abusing it.

Um, no. It means they'll become more cowardly and not do sh**t all. More will probably retire and the media narrative will be that they're going down in November because of what just happened to the point that they somehow make it come true. But that's good because government is bad.

The Democratic majority in Congress is finished -imagine the burst of momentum the GOP is going to have from this going forward...

Come on. To suggest that this election is going to cause the GOP to take one or both houses back is ludicrous. It might happen, but unlikely, and we have a long time to go until November.

Don't underestimate yourselves.  The GOP has managed the impossible -having brought the American people to disaster over the course of the past decade, they nonetheless managed through sheer chutzpah to convince them that they alone can rescue them from their own failures by following the same failed policies of the past.

I have to hand it to them -and the unbelievable amnesia and gullibility of the American people. After all we've been through, I didn't think it was possible -tonight (and likely this coming November) has humbled me.

Normally I'd be pissed or sad that a guy like Brown wins, but given how the Democrats screwed this up worse than could be imagined and given that Obama is a useless joke and the Democrats continue to lack balls and competence, I don't feel anything. Maybe even happy that the Democrats get payback for being incompetent.

I don't think I posted this chart before.  It's vote by town Median Household Income from the 1999 census.  With 64% in (Boston.com stillisn't cooperating) Coakley won the towns with poorest households. Brown took most of the rest, though he did better in the middle than among the rich.

Again, turnout differential from 2008 goes up with income.

Democrats still seem not to get what's going on.

Republicans don't either, of course (at least not what I see), but Scott Brown is benefitting from Democrats in this particular situation.

Just IMO.

I've aggregated them.  I'll give them to you when I integrate the newest data - which I finally was able to download from the Boston Globe's website.  Likely the 88% data.

Thanks cinyc for all of your hard work. Your charts that you post here are beautifully presented, and you help to explain the why. Without the differential turnout, it would have been quite a tight election, as Coakley say in Boston goes ahead of the pvi now by a couple of points, with about 80% counted. Coakley's operatives were right that they knew they lost, given the light turnout in Boston, and perhaps some other areas where she needed a good turnout, and didn't get it. Any kudos cinyc. Smiley
