Among my assigned readings for my Comparative Politics class two weeks ago was a godawful, cliche-ridden piece by a fellow named David Landes, explaining (in the most condescending tone you could imagine) Europe's "success" and China's "failure" by the fact that the latter were arrogant, ethnocentric and lacked the drive to innovation that Europeans had. It was written in the 1990s. I still can't believe it.
