Plea bargaining in criminal cases is out of control because prosecutors are lazy asses, who in general are incompetent to try cases anyway. 
Actually, somebody told me in Columbia County, New York, almost no criminal cases go to trial. They are all plea bargained away, which may be a good thing, since the judges have a reputation of being political hacks, of questionable ethics, some of whom allegedly are not even lawyers. That seems facially noisome to me. You ever done a trial Badger?
Over 70 juries, smart ass.
Not to mention more bench trials and motion hearings (suppression issues, etc.) than I could possbily count.
And won most. Had my first out and out trial loss in almost 3 years just the other week with a case I was helping a younger attorney on.
