Which group is even smarmier and more smug than the other? Both seem to have a disproportionate amount of the self-righteous within their ranks. Who are the kings and queens of self-satisfaction?

At least "smug" moderate Republicans largely own their "selfishness" (LOL, by the way).  They want to keep more of their own money and don't really care about the culture war stuff.  Elitist or insensitive or selfish?  Sure, whatever floats your boat.  Sanctimonious??  That adjective does not apply, IMO.

I'm going with the progressive liberals, who act like they're God's gift to humanity to save everyone from themselves.

That's not what I'm saying. You, actually, are a moderate Republican.

RogueBeaver, however, is not--and I say this as somebody who's fond of the guy. He consistently supports the most conservative viable options available in his own country, and he generally supports Republicans in American elections--something that most foreign right-leaners don't do, not just because muh Overton windows, but because there's a nationalistic rhetorical style to Republican politics that non-Americans find offputting and that it takes real commitment to one's right-wing politics to overcome.

Yeah, RougeBeaver isn't necessarily an extremist, but he's pretty firmly on the right wing side of the political spectrum.
