We can chalk this up to a number of things....
1. Millennials are way more socially/culturally liberal. Even a good number of young conservatives support gay marriage. Religion isn't really a huge part of their lives and if it is they prefer it to be private and separate from politics.
2. The GOP does a piss poor job of reaching out to this group. Obama did an amazing job in 2008 and that is still carrying over.
3. Diversity. 40% of Millenials are non-white and a good portion of them are the children of immigrants. Anti-immigrant politics isn't going to play well with them. This is a generation who, for the most part, grew up with friends of many different colors and backgrounds.
4. Obama is playing well with this group because of two issues:
- Allowing them to stay on their parent's insurance until 26
-Student loans
5: The environment. What do olds care if they deplete all our fossil fuels and give us the coastal flooding, severe storms, desertification, famine, etc. that come with climate change? They'll be dead by then, screw the future. But we're going to be alive when it all hits the fan, of course we have to care.
Admittedly green issues are far less prominent than they were four years ago. But they're still important to many of us (and should be important to many, many more).
