as a great candidate, especially when his opponent was supposed to be a joke.  That was a terrible result for Warner.
I'm not saying he is a great candidate, but he still survived a wave. And I would note that he was elected in a Democratic wave, so his winning margin wasn't entirely due to the campaign he ran, and probably had a lot more to do with Gilmore running an awful campaign.
