I have not been to all of the counties yet, but:

1. COLUMBIA
2. New York
3. Greene
4. Dutchess
5. Allegheny

Least desirable overall that I have seen? The Pub bastion of Orleans County. It's flat, and depressed, with ugly structures strewn around randomly. I think it died because it could not compete agriculturally with the Midwest.

My state is so big that I can't even name all the counties, and of course I haven't been to all of them, either.

Woodford is nice. DuPage is nice. Will is pretty nice. Sangamon is home. I've liked it here so far. Marion is pretty nice.

Nice place. Fairly slow-paced, little less crowded, nice beaches. Also a couple remarkably good bookstores, some of the best I’ve visited.

Don't know if I'd include it today; looking at that list, Alachua was a glaring omission. Would probably swap Alachua for IR and maybe put in Hillsborough or Orange over Leon.

In no particular order:

1. Gratiot County, home of Alma, MI and Alma College, and home to a dear friend. I've been there a few times.

2. Hillsdale County, home to Hillsdale College. I've been there once. Home to Jonesville's Sauk Theatre.

3. Bay County. Home of Bay City, one of my favorite cities in MI to visit. Pretty solidly Democratic county until 2016. Singer Madonna is from Bay City by way of Rochester Hills. The 1970s boy band, the Bay City Rollers, are not from Bay City (they got their name from a dart randomly thrown at a map that landed on, of all places, Bay City).

4-5. Arenac and Ogemaw Counties. I have spent many fine summer weekends here relaxing along the Rifle River.

Honorable Mention: Oscoda County. I've never visited (though it's just up M-33 from Arenac and Ogemaw Counties). Mio had the highest recorded temperature in MI (112 degrees F, on July 13, 1936). Oscoda is also, supposedly, the poorest county in the state (though some other sources give Oceana County this honor) and was the most Democratic county in the state in the 1978 governor's race; today, it is one of the state's most Republican counties.
