What do you guys think would've happend if Dewey had truly beaten Truman in 1948? Do oyu think he would've made a good president? What would he have likely done as President? How would he have dealt with Korea--Would it have even started? How might he have dealt with McCarthy? The Cold War?

He'd have been a great President, though, in the end, I'm certain things would have ended up quite similar.

This topic should be in "Alternative History".

The only positive I could see about Dewey is that he wasn't Truman.

Dewey always came off to me as a very classy, authoritative fellow; He had, I think, perhaps not the cunning or intellect of FDR, but definitely the stately or statesmen-esque persona that made FDR so loved, whereas I've always looked at Truman as little more than a political hack--He was an OK president but had none of the insight, depth, intellect or even political mastery that FDR had.

That's funny, because I see it in an entirely different way. I see Truman actually as a man with greater backbone then FDR, and roughly equal intellect. By all accounts I've seen, or heard of, FDR has neither great backbone or intellect, but great temperament.

The liberal wing of the GOP might have survived and still be around had he won.

I think that he'd have made either a good or a decent President. I think that there would have been large job creation under his Presidency (at least under his first term.) I also think that Republicans would not be saying things like the Democrats lost China or the Democrats lost North Korea because the Republicans would now have to handle those crises instead of the Democrats. I think that moderates might have had more strength in the Republican Party today, but conservatives could have also took over the GOP as they did in RL. Eisenhower, Nixon, and Ford were very moderate/liberal, especially on economic policy, but all it took is one man in the form of Reagan to make the GOP extremely conservative.
