I think 30 years from now, We'll be saying Ted Kennedy and John McCain for this era.

Kennedy would be included now, and I may waive the requirement if a person receives 7 nominations.

Add Wellstone, Moynihan, Gravel, and McCarthy (Eugene) for good measure.

you've got to be f***ing kidding me.  What a disgrace to my state and our nation.
DWDL idolizes racists, you see.
You admire Byrd. If Lott is a racist, Byrd is just as much of one.
Silly Phil, Dems can't be racist.  And didn't you know that saying you admire Strom Thurmond makes you more of a racist than donning the white robes?

Most of my picks have already been mentioned, but...

-George McGovern
-Hubert Humphrey
-Mark Hatfield
-Gerald Nye
-Charles Sumner
-Birch Bayh
-Albert Cummins

I also give a tip of my hat to Senator SPC for nominating John Tyler (as I wrote my senior thesis on his political views during his retirement).  The only senator to vote against the Force Bill, if I recall correctly.

And the Senate in 2000 oddly enough apparently adopted a resolution which reminds us of these worthies:

Robert Taft (not one of my personal favorites because he was an isolationist protectionist but whatever)
Robert LaFollette
Robert Wagner

I definitely give Robert Wagner a lot of credit for trying to pass anti lynching legislation.  Also, his work to address unfair labor practices is very notable.  I can certainly see him being considered one of the great senators.
