Let's say President Gerald R. Ford, while campaigning for a first full four-year term, gets assassinated while in Sacramento, California on September 5, 1975.

VP John Bowden Connally (the former 3-term Texas Governor and Treasury Secretary under Nixon) assumed the presidency to finish out Ford's term. In 1976, Connally runs for full term, but is challenged by former California Governor Ronald Reagan (R) for the GOP nomination, Connally wins the nasty primary.

He faces the Democratic nominee, former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter (D) in the general election, how y'all think a Connally vs. Carter matchup would have looked like ?

You know, this would be so interesting.

Obviously the South would be in play, since there is another southerner.

Still:

287 For Carter
250 For Connally

Connally wasn't VP in 1975, Nelson Rockefeller was, By the By, and Connally would probably be acceptable to Reagen, so he probably wouldn't give a Primary Challenge.

1. This is alternate history.
2. Reagan would have primaried Connally; he was a former Democrat, and a key ally of Nixon, who Reagan also viewed as too liberal.

1. Fine then, I think the author worded it a bit wrong.

2. John Connally was to the right of Nixon on many respects, he wouldn't be too Liberal for Reagen.

This is in the "what-if" section. Shouldn't it be obvious?

And Connally would have been primaried. He may have been to Nixon's right, but he was still for Nixon, and Reagan was leading a crusade against the Nixon wing of the party.

The fact that he was indicted by a Federal grand jury on charges of perjury and conspiracy to obstruct justice would have majorly damaged him winning a election in 76. Now that I think of it.
