New Election: 1998 Idaho Controller General Election Results

To the best of my knowledge, this is the last time a Democrat won statewide office in Idaho.

Well, obviously the Democratic Superintendent of Public instruction Marilyn Howard who was termed out in '06, was elected in '98 and reelected in '02, making her the last Dem elected statewide.

That said, her margins of victory were never this impressive.

Madison County may be hyper-Republican, but it's not very partisan (just look at this year's Gov-results).

Manages the public education system.

So, the State Superintendent of Schools. Why not call it that?

And why is it an elected post? I thought superintendents were normally hired by school boards. Maybe I shouldn't ask; it's probably for some stupid religious-right political reason like elected judges.

Because it includes adult outreach and enrichment programs, I think.

It's for the whole state, so it wouldn't be any school board. In most states, it's an appointed position, but it's elected in some. It's elected in North Dakota too.

In Minnesota it's appointed, and Pawlenty threw a giant fit when his super-partisan hack appointee wasn't confirmed by the Senate. Apparentely he thinks the legislature should be a rubber stamp.
