He was 61. A massive loss for sure.

Yeah, this is a monumental loss for indie music. Steve Albini's fingerprints are all over some of the most iconic records ever (Nirvana's In Utero, Pixies' Surfer Rosa, plus his work with his own bands) and the echoes from his production style have continued to permeate modern rock music. RIP to a legend.

RIP

Too early for 21st century standards

Many years ago, I have already perceived that the albums In Utero (Nirvana) and Rid of Me (PJ Harvey) sounded very similar. Both albums were produced in 1993. Recently I learned in this video (in Portuguese) that Albini worked on both albums.

Surfer Rosa is without exaggeration one of the most important and influential albums in the history of popular music. He pretty much invented what we think of as the "indie rock" sound. Really good work with PJ Harvey and Slint too. In Utero is also the only Nirvana release I ever liked because of the sound he brought to it.

Also cool and very punk rock that he refused royalties and just charged a flat fee for production services. Even for Nirvana where the album was sure to sell 15+ mil.
