I couldn't find any recent polls on the issue, but there was no movement from post Vietnam through post 9/11.

There's going to be a great deal of resistance to the idea of women having to sign up for selective service, as there ought to be in the face of universalizing a wrong for the sake of equality.  But legally, the rationale courts have made for allowing excluding women from selective service has been that women are excluded from combat.  There may be other arguments for having women excluded from the selective service, but they aren't fashionable.

Now women get to be shot at along with men. What wonderful progress.

Women have ended up in combat in almost every war. Women in the Armed Services of most countries are taught to use weapons and develop hand-to-hand combat skills.

Support battalions can be surprised, and women can fight back. If they have cause to fear rape as POWs they might be particularly ferocious. Resistance movements throughout Europe and Asia had no shortage of female participants during WWII.

The real solution? Try waging fewer pointless wars.

I wonder if it will lead to increased support for abolishing the Selective Service System? The Senate has been more supportive of it than the House IIRC though there was a House amendment in 2011 that would have de-funded it and it failed:

It's not like the Selective Service would actually be capable of quickly organizing a draft even if they wanted to. Might as well save the money.

How many wars since 1945 has the US fought that were pointless in your estimation?

I wonder how the Israeli military handles this.
