Two other unusual tourist destinations under awful dictatorships (though not to the same extent as North Korea).

I would choose Turkmenistan, but I don't plan to visit either.

As a student of post-communism (lol), obvious choice.

Considering I would probably get in trouble on my first day in Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan. The farther away from the Levant I am the safer I feel.

I'm an Arabist by education, so Saudi Arabia.

Visit, not live.

I visited the Soviet Union in the late 80's so seeing a former republic holds more interest for me.

Turkmenistan because most of the stuff worth seeing in Saudi Arabia is out of bounds to non-Muslims.

Saudi Arabia, it would be nice to finally have an entire nation trying to kill me.

Turkmenistan because most of the stuff worth seeing in Saudi Arabia is out of bounds to non-Muslims.

Fun fact: during the 1979 seige of Mecca, the Saudi forces were assisted by three functionaries of the French National Gendarmerie Intervention Group. They had to undergo a speed conversion to be able to enter the city.

I would vote Saudi Arabia....

Although obviously anti-American attitudes create a much higher risk profile, outside of the gated foreign enclaves, and I would likely have to take a break with alcohol consumption, the level of corruption and violent crime targeting foreign nationals in Turkmenistan is likely to be significantly higher there than in an extremely religious fundamentalist country like Saudi Arabia....

My wife might have a different opinion on this choice however, so obviously there would be a major family discussion on our choices of tourism locations.

Now Turkey on the other hand would likely win hands down for the both of us if we had the funding and choices about where to spend an unlimited three month vacation within a "region" that stretches for thousands of miles.
