In Response to Torie's idea in this thread:
https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=95634.0#msg1986577

This is the Centrist Group Hug.

1. Gustaf, General Secretary of the Centrist International
2. Frodo, leader of our Democratic insurgence wing
3. Torie, leader of our Republican insurgence wing
4. Hughento, who wouldn't want to be left out of a group hug with a bunch of guys
5. AKSaber, see #4
6. Lunar, because he's popular
7. Alcon, director of Centrist intelligence services
8. Joe Republic, because he has no ideology
9. Sam Spade, see #9
10. WalterMitty, because no one knows what his ideology is

We're a big-tent hug of course, so feel free to nominate other centrists for the giant group hug.

Centrist Group Hug - Because while trying to please everyone, you please no one and things get lonely...but we're still "the popular" ones. Weird, eh?

LOL yeah! Classic Don. Bill Frist was a centrist, too, but Santorum (who had a near identical voting record) was far right. What a joke.

I think he means "less polarizing" at least that's what I think he means.  In a way, Bush was pragmatic and forward-thinking demographically by liberalizing on immigration.

But I want to hug 9 dudes about as much as Santorum would.

You weren't around at the time so don't assume.

Centrism doesn't necessarily mean pragmatic. Don was foolish and tried to argue that Bush and Frist were actual centrists.

I never cease to be amazed at how quickly Phil can turn any thread into a Don-bashing extravaganza.

Anyway, yes I do believe that President Bush and Bill Frist expressed centrist tendencies that were never acknowledged by our liberal friends, even when they were beat up on by our conservative friends.  Bush and immigration reform is an obvious example of course, but he was criticized by "conservatives" on numerous occasions for not following the talk-radio agenda at all times.   Frist is a part of the "Tennessee tradition" of statesmen like Lamar Alexander, Howard Baker, Bob Corker, etc. who place country and morality above ideology.   Certainly he made his fair share of mistakes (like the Terri Schiavo deal, which I regret supporting) but he also makes numerous humanitarian trips to Africa and clearly has a heart for humanity.

Among Republicans, you must include Bullmoose and Nick Naylor...both of whom are quite amazing!

I'm a little harder to please when it comes to Democrats being centrists or moderates.  I tend to be more of a "sh*t or get off the pot" kinda guy...but honestly, I realize we need them.  And they are usually pretty good guys.  Frodo is an excellent pick.  I don't know him that well but True Democrat might fit, don't you think? The erstwhile Gabu or Modu?  Ben?

LOL

So that makes him a centrist?

Hey, anyone "with a heart for humanity" is a centrist! Great to know. Of course, as a conservative, you don't have a heart, don't put country and morality ahead of ideology, etc.  Roll Eyes

By the way, Santorum was very involved with relief in Africa and you still branded him as far right.

You love your double standards, Don. Always have and always will.

I haven't turned this thread into one.

YET.

If you listen to Rush Limbaugh these days, you wouldn't get the impression that conservatives care about anything other than punishing moderates, saying no to whatever Obama is for, greed, and tea-brewing.

By the way, Santorum was very involved with relief in Africa and you still branded him as far right.

And Santorum supported Specter.  Maybe he belongs in the centrist hug.  We'll put him next to Hugh.

I used to participate in group hugs.  But then, someone in the group would say something like, "Uh...okay.  That's enough.  No.  I mean, stop.  Please.  Okay...someone call security..."

What's up with that?

Aren't you just totally bent out of shape now JS that you are not a centrist, as you look over longingly at our group sharing that special communal moment together?  Well, you and I will have to figure out another excuse for a hug. Smiley

Where were your hands during the hug?  That is the first question that comes to mind. I may have others.

If you listen to Rush Limbaugh these days, you wouldn't get the impression that conservatives care about anything other than punishing moderates, saying no to whatever Obama is for, greed, and tea-brewing.

This is what you do when you fail at arguing - you resort to applying everything Rush Limbaugh says to conservatism.

The image just reminded me of someone I knew.  There are friendly people...then there are "creepy-friendly" people.  He was one who always hugged and wouldn't let go.  His hands didn't always wander.  At least, not always...  <shudder>
