Obama is as much a Marxist as a Muslim- that is, if he were, he'd be doing a damned terrible job at it.

Nah. Marxism is definitely needed. And mass wealth redistribution is an absolute must.

You can voluntarily give up most of your money to the government for just that now every year on your taxes!

By definition, if something is confiscated then it is no longer yours.  Besides I'm pretty sure that unless you are really quite rich the modern Marxist wouldn't really want to confiscate your wealth, especially since less and less people are able to save a decent amount of money...

To answer the question: Obama is a standard American liberal, nothing more, nothing less.  To think that he's a Marxist or a Communist - hell, even a Socialist - shows that you have no idea what any of those words mean.  It'd be fab if America had a Socialist President, but it has not yet happened.

I might hate political theory, but Americans need a serious dose of understanding what these terms actually mean.

I mean, even one of our resident c*****s, knows Obama isn't a Marxist, but will still call him because it's the more shrill approach.

Even if Americans learned what they meant, it wouldn't stop the abuse of these terms. Something like "Obama is a Marxist" is used as a shorthand for "I dislike Obama". Popular political usage can be thought of as inverse non-cognitivism, in a way.

Navel-gazing... I can't standing listening to people theorise about other people who sat about theorising about other people's theories. I doesn't really teach you much and you risk ending up in a self-imposed ideological bog. People do things and think things, because they do, most don't adhere to any particular consistency (and those who do worry the hell out of me).

But you've gotta have reasons for believing policy X is good or policy Y is bad, don't you? It can't just be muh pragmatism, because pragmatism can lead to literally anything depending on what your goals are. If you don't have normative reasons to orient your policies, what's even the point of any policy?

Also, your caricature of theorists as self-absorbed dogmatists is incredibly unfair. Most of them I've known are, as far as I could see, just as open-minded as anyone else, if not more (because they actually have been exposed to a variety of ideas). I could never myself become a theorist, mainly because I'm a terrible reader, but I have a lot of respect for those who want to go that road.
