The Colorado Senate passed a bill Thursday that would provide a ballot by mail to every state voter, allow vote centers for those who choose not to use the mail ballot and — controversially — allow people to register and vote on Election Day.

The bill passed 20-15 with the full support of Democrats and no Republican votes. The bill passed the House on a party-line vote last month.

Before it can go to Gov. John Hickenlooper for a signature to become the new way elections are held in Colorado, the bill must return to the House for approval because of "technical" amendments added in the Senate.

Impressive. There may be five states passing same-day registration this year. Maryland's already done, now Colorado, and Hawaii, Nevada (will Sandoval veto?) and Delaware might be the next: http://www.ncsl.org/legislatures-elections/elections/same-day-registration.aspx

I love the Republican reactions too. Can't you tell how much they love people voting?

It's now on his desk as the state house passed the state senate-amended bill a few hours ago: http://www.therepublic.com/view/story/d96fce1b19d048b38ec825bfd52b90a7/CO-XGR--Election-Overhaul-Colorado

It's astonishing how much Republicans loathe any reform that might make it easier for people to vote. It's as if they believe their own "voter fraud" bullsh**t.

A good day for Democracy.

Implementing this kind of reforms is a great thing anyway, but particularly essential in swing States like CO. Hopefully others will follow suit.

I Purple heart Colorado.  Though they definitely have a chip on their shoulders regarding outsiders.

It always kinda boggled my mind as a kid when Coloradans could vacation at our resort... like... why would you come to northern Minnesota?  But that's part of the intense cultural cringe we have.  And Colorado has lots of mountains... but is short on water/lakes.  A Campfire as the sun sets with loons calling in the background and the occasional hum of a motor boat slowly moving by on the glass calm lake is kinda romantic.  (you wait for the wake waves to lap the shore in their hypnotic pattern)

Looks like Hawaii will actually be in 2014?

We'll find out soon enough on Nevada's bill. It's passed the state house already and a state senate committee approved it yesterday: http://www.mynews3.com/content/news/story/Voter-Registration-Nevada-Senate-panel/Vw0ji4xlvky3PVS8WDX6ig.cspx

It was originally a same-day registration bill and Democrats modified it to close the registration period on the Friday before Election Day to hopefully garner Sandoval's support as he was opposed to same-day registration but, as you can see above, that didn't work: http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/nevada-legislature/sandoval-opposes-early-voter-registration-bill

How many instances are there where Republicans support an expansion of voting rights?

Same day voter registration makes fraud easier? Must be like how easy access to guns makes murder harder.

Wonderful news. It's really grotesque that this is on any wise a partisan issue, although I do understand the (profoundly venal) reasons why it is.

It's astonishing how much Republicans loathe any reform that might make it easier for people to vote. It's as if they believe their own "voter fraud" bullsh**t.

They don't (well, not most of them).  The Republican machine is a fascist organization at its heart.  Sure, they can't ACTUALLY go through with something like that, but power/greed/money is all they know and all they can understand.  Statistics show that Democrats benefit from high turnout and those who don't vote would vote overwhelmingly Democratic.  They understand this, and it is in their best interests (and the best interests of their puppet masters) to quash efforts to ease the burden on voting.

Anyone who calls themselves a Republican ought to be ashamed at this particular aspect of their party.  The GOP literally tries to make it harder to vote/prevent measures to make it easier everywhere and anywhere they can.  Their evidence is usually a single isolated incident almost always involving a minority.

If you can't win, change the rules of the game until you win.

Thats the Republican motto.

Colorado -- probably gone for Republicans.

Pennsylvania has just become the swing state of 2016.
