Rules: They can only come from the Republican and Democratic  parties(third party candidates who won 20%+ of the popular vote can be included on this) and presidents who got defeated in their bid for another term can count as well.

He denounced them in 1924 - losing votes in the South in the process. He also supported black voting rights while under Wilson
I would say perhaps his role in Brown v Board of Education is big even though that is much, much later.

I hadn't heard that before; but in any case, there is no shortage of reasons to despise John W. Davis:
