People prefer Carson to Cruz for much of the same reason the Republican primary voters once preferred Bachmann to Cain (or maybe the flameout happened in the other order; I can't remember): He hasn't embarrassed himself on the national stage yet.
As for why he has good credentials, being raised in inner city Detroit to become the head of Johns Hopkins' department of pediatric neurosurgery is no small feat. His credentials are incredibly impressive as is his life story. It probably won't translate to politics though, at least if what we've seen thus far is any predictor. But most casual political observers haven't seen that yet. They're still awed by his resume.
