Founding Principles
The Conservative Party is founded on the principles of liberty, community, and social responsibility. We believe that all persons possess certain rights and responsibilities, and that it is the state's foremost function to ensure that these rights and responsibilities are met.
We believe in the principle of free enterprise and the market economy, not as a dogma, but as the best proven guarantor of human prosperity and advancement, and for the state to ensure its continued functioning and defend its integrity. We do
not believe in a system where supply and demand are left to govern affairs to the detriment of all others, or the basic quality of life, and maintain that an open and
regulated market is the best way to achieve economic growth and progress, rather than a over-financialised system driven towards the pursuit of short-term profit rather than long-term value.
We believe that all people of our country are members of a National Community, and it is towards their fellow members of the national community that all people have responsibilities. For this reason, we believe that a network of social support is not only a preferable guarantor of basic individual well-being and human dignity, but a
required system of assistance towards our national community. It is required of us that we, means allowing, do all we can to eradicate the fundamental ills of human life: suffering in sickness, poverty, homelessness, old age, and so forth. As members of the community, and the government of the people, it is required of us to do all we can to ensure that these ills are eliminated and to give all people an equal chance to succeed and to claim their equal right to a life with dignity.
We believe that all people should be afforded equal opportunity in life, and the chance to claim a quality education in line with their potential and own efforts. This education should also seek to instill the values of civic-mindedness and co-operation within the national community to improve life for all citizens and the principles of social responsibility. The foremost guardian and product of these principles are tradition, to which we defer-- not without necessary scrutiny-- and regard as the guarantor of national progress, cohesion, prosperity and liberty.
Our defence and foreign policy will be determined following the clarification of the foreign situation.
