I'm all for more business and military backgrounds in our candidates, personally.

O'Leary is forming an exploratory committee that will be headed by LeBreton.

Libertarianism has never been an influential part of conservative politics here, whether it be Mulroneyism or Unionism. Leaving aside Bernier being PNG outside the Beauce.

Bernier without a doubt. Only Scheer of the serious candidates could really compete, especially since most of them are unilingual and therefore eliminated by default. (As I've said before, unilingualism is a red line for me)

Anti-elitist Kellie Leitch is an insufferable asshole. She also breakfasted with O'Leary yesterday.

Leitch wants to unilaterally abolish the Indian Act.

Clarke endorses Bernier.

O'Leary will run as an above-the-fray moderate.

Interesting Bernier internal has a 3-way tie nationally with Leitch and Raitt, but he dominates here in Quebec. Leitch strategist says they have similar numbers. O'Leary not tested. Yuge grain of salt as with all internals, but those are the only proper polls we'll see.

Because Leitch was a bleeding-heart moderate until about 5 minutes ago.

Ivison: O'Leary is the prohibitive favourite, with Bernier, Leitch and Alexander (!) polling strongly.

Ivison: Race is still O'Leary's to lose, and Bernier's probably the only one who can stop him.

I share Glavin and Coyne's concerns here on the Islamophobia motion and certain winds blowing through the party generally.

Other candidates are trying to capitalize on Bernier's ideological vulnerabilities, especially supply management, here.

Globe on Bernier's econ plans.

How will O'Leary enter parliament? Move to Harper's empty seat?

Candidate's already been nominated for that seat & by-election will be held in April. Presumably he'd run somewhere in Ontario in the unlikely event he won. Since he's quite dismissive of entering the Commons anytime soon, someone else would serve as parliamentary leader till he did.
