TR's 27% was tbe highest popular vote percentage by far for any third party candidate ever. Ours is a two party system. Third party candidates simply do not do well here. Carter, Ford and Bush all were defeated for reelection, and would do poorly as third party candidates, even if they were younger. If the 22nd ammendment were repealed, Clinton would do just as poorly if the Dems wouldn't nominate him and he had to run with a 3rd party.
Second best 3rd party showing: Millard Fillmore, 1856, 21%.
