Picture this hypothetical.

It is 2028. China's economy rapidly plunged in 2027 before anyone could disentangle, triggering a worldwide "New Depression", which is on par with the great one. Kamala Harris, being dragged down with Biden and the Democratic Congress, opted out of running. Newsom, Warren, and basically every other big name 2028 candidate followed suit or at least kept mum into summer 2027. With this, the primary is down to four big candidates, all complete oddities who barely even belong to the party-Cornel West (who was the first to announce, joining the party in the hopes the lack of any serious opposition would be good to him), Jared Golden (who announced shortly after, buoyed by being a bit of a maverick against the hated Biden and being young), Bernie Sanders (who didn't want to run, but didn't want West to run the Progressive movement of a cliff against Golden or the Republicans, thus joining back the party and announcing his third run), and Joe Manchin (who barely won reelection in 2024 as an independent thanks to Blankenship and didn't want to run, but jumped in to stop Golden from burying the Blue Dogs). Needless to say, almost no one is enthused about these being the options.

So, who do you vote for and who do you want winning? I'm personally voting Golden if I have to make a choice (though I am conservative-ish, so it makes sense, but he's also the youngest), but sadly betting on a brokered convention that drafts Harris or some D-list sacrificial lamb.
