If Obama wins the nomination but somehow manages to screw things up and lose in November...I sincerely doubt the Democrats will give him the luxury of a second chance (barring a Gore-style loss).  They may love him now (well, half of them at least), but they'll turn on him if he loses.  Does this mean Clinton would get the nod in 2012?  Probably not.

If Clinton gets the nomination & loses, Obama should have the 2012 nomination in the bag.

I think if McCain wins in 2008, regardless of who he beats, the Democrats will move back toward the DLC, possibly even more extreme than before (think Tony Blair) and Obama will not be seen as electable.

...or in the complete opposite direction, if Obama's loss is seen as a failure of the "let's reach out to independents" strategy.
