Oil and Stability are the chief concerns of the US in this region. (I doubt the US could get away with a planning a Pinochet-style coup in Venezuela right now; way too much bad publicity if that did happen.)

Chavez Himself knows this and with a constantly recieved mandate in the elections is now moving towards (in policy) the positions he had all along.
