Write In: Chris Dodd. They did it all back in the 1960's (not to mention at the present time) and I am quite sure many people in similar situations vote for write in's, from the opposite party. From memory Adlai Stevenson got about 1% of the GOP vote in the 1960 New Hampshire Primary.

You could always stay a registered Republican and vote for a nut like Ron Paul.

What about John Cox? Apparently he is a nutjob but aren't all the 2008 GOP candidates are?

Use it as an opportunity to vote against the republicans you'd least like to see; it means they might not win your state, might not win the nomination, and might not be President. It's one vote, sure, but it might be enough to really make the difference between a Huckabee or a Giuliani.

Aside from those interested in running for office, I'm not sure why anyone would actually register with a political party in Massachusetts anymore.  'Tis far easier to stay "unenrolled" and just jump into and vote in any primary that catches your fancy.

September 2006 -> Deval Patrick.
February 2008 -> John McCain.

Well it depends. Are there plausible 2008 matchups where you would vote for the Republican? In that case, vote for the Republican you like most.
Are there none such, no really plausible ones anyhow? Vote for the Republican with the least chance to win the general.

I'd stay Republican.  Coming from someone else who can't stand (most of) the GOP field, it means more to stick it to the party from inside the party.  We've got to hold on and help push the party back to sanity.  Tangent: Did you vote for Romney in 2002?  Just curious.
He wasn't living in Massachusetts in 2002, so I'd venture a "no" guess.

It might be too late to change parties before the primaries.

In Connecticut, you have to wait 3 months after changing before you can vote in a primary. We have a very strict closed primary in this state. I don't know the laws on this in Massachusetts but I'm assuming they are similar.

I convinced a friend of mine to switch from Republican to Democrat in January 2004, and she wasn't allowed to vote in the primary on March 2 that year. We were both very annoyed.
