This week's Holy Word.

Featuring a councillor who resigned but then decided to stand in the by-election as an Independent because he didn't approve of his party's choice of candidate to replace him.

7 votes.  Makes Goldthorpe look like a hotbed of Thatcherism.

The winning Independent in Oban North & Lorn is a Labour member, and stood as a Labour candidate in some of the previous by-elections.  There's an article explaining his shift to Independent at http://forargyll.com/?p=103922

OK, so what were Labour doing picking a candidate from Stocksbridge in Mosborough?

A poor week for the Cons. Is it entirely coincidental, or is there something cooking ?

I wouldn't read much into it.  But the Lib Dems do seem to be having a number of good results; I wonder how their Witney campaign is going.

Cotswold, Stow

Lib Dem 64.9 (+21.0)
Con 35.1 (-21.0)

Just over the border in Gloucestershire, but not a million miles away from a certain parliamentary constituency.

I'll let ObserverIE post nicely coloured results, but it seems that not much happened except a Lib Dem gain from Con on a huge swing in Broadstone, Poole.  Lib Dems held both Windermere seats, Labour held both Lewisham wards and the Morecambe seat, the local party for local people Lincolnshire Independents held the North Kesteven ward, and the Tories held on in Swanley.
