In the middle of the road can be lethargic. being "open" is basically neutral. Having an opinionion based on your own research puts you up for attack, so it takes some courage especially on blogs to say something you believe but don't want to take on shrapnel for stating your opinion. Being a moderate? Safe, but not helpful. All it takes for evil to take over is for good men to do nothing! Being a safe moderate is doing nothing, riding the status quo and letting the ambitious who ardently push agendas with a coercion that don't necessarilly have the moderate tollerance view in mind which you'd prefer.
