It has been pointed out that the 1992 elections saw the end of split-ticket voting, obscured partly by the candidacy of Ross Perot. Beginning with 1996, however, there have been few cross-party voters (Romney Democrats or Obama Republicans for instance) and few people have voted for, say, Romney for President and the Dem candidate for Senate.

With the growth of functional illiteracy, the growth in the voter pool (recent immigrants for example) and the desire of the public for immediate feedback on the results, might the ballot in each state simplified to allow a voter to vote only a straight-party line, not for individual candidates (which also takes longer)? I certainly hope not.
