make political endorsements like newspapers do?  to bow at the sacred cow of ratings?

They are also regulated by the government.  Newspapers are not.  Neither is the Internet.

Well, realistically they were regulated by the government, but not in any meaningful way since around 1981 or so.

Anyway deniable right-wing bias is more effective than outright endoresement anyway.

Historical precedent. They did it long before TV anchors et al. decided not to do it.

To not to piss people off. Endorse another candidate besides their own, and many will quit watching that network. However if a newspaper endorses another candidate, you usually don't have much of a choice since it's usually the only paper in that market (and if there's more than one it's usually only two and they simply have opposing ideological slants)
