I'm curious as to how Blacks voted when there wasn't a 100% name recognition candidate running.

Also, please don't move this to the 2004 section, at least not yet, because I don't think anyone checks that.

In most states, for Kerry. In contested primaries outside of the Carolinas, Kerry and Sharpton over performed in blacker counties, such as in Georgia and Virginia. In the Carolinas however, black voters went with Edwards as that's who won their states. No clear direction like in 2008/2016. Its definitely worth noting though that Edwards was definitely the candidate of conservative white Democrats.

According to Gallup, Blacks voted 93% for Kerry in 2004. That was down from 95% in 2000 for Gore.

When it was still perceived as competitive (through Super Tuesday), Kerry was getting somewhere between 50-60% of the black vote. He was winning less than that in the early contests, but still pulling a plurality overall even then. He only lost in SC to Edwards and even that was within the MoE. He was also on the winning side of MoE in OK against Clark. These contests (the ones with crosstabs for black voters) are grouped below in chronological order.

DE: Kerry 44%, Sharpton 30%
MO: Kerry 53%, Sharpton 16%, Edwards 16%
OK: Kerry 31%, Clark 29%, Edwards 20%
SC: Edwards 37%, Kerry 34%, Sharpton 17%

VA: Kerry 61%, Edwards 20%
TN: Kerry 47%, Clark 28%, Edwards 15%

WI: Kerry 55%, Edwards 15%, Dean 15%, Sharpton 12%

CA: Kerry 56%, Edwards 14%, Sharpton 14%
CT: Kerry 60%, Sharpton 19%, Edwards 17%
GA: Kerry 61%, Edwards 25%, Sharpton 10%
MD: Kerry 67%, Edwards 16%, Sharpton 12%
MA: Kerry 81%, Edwards 8%
NY: Kerry 54%, Sharpton 34%
OH: Kerry 60%, Edwards 24%, Sharpton 10%

On top, you can go to "pick state".
